An ancient white grape variety cultivated since 1400 in the Roero region. For centuries it was vinified as a sweet wine or used in the production of vermouth. It experienced a period of glory associated with the royal courts of Europe, but in the early 1900s it was in danger of extinction. Due to the difficulty of cultivation and its low yield, it was almost abandoned in favor of more productive and easy-to-grow varieties, such as Chardonnay.
Since the late 1960s, the variety has experienced a rebirth thanks to dry and pure vinification. Today, it is considered the quintessential white wine of Piedmont.
DOCG since 2004, production is allowed in the municipalities of: Canale, Corneliano d'Alba, Piobesi d'Alba, Vezza d'Alba, Baldissero d'Alba, Castagnito, Castellinaldo, Govone, Guarene, Magliano Alfieri, Montà, Montaldo Roero, Monteu Roero, Monticello d'Alba, Pocapaglia, Priocca, S. Vittoria d'Alba, S. Stefano Roero and Sommariva Perno.
The harvest season was quite hot and dry. The storms at the end of the summer acted as a balance, providing the freshness needed to produce great white wines. The reduction in traffic due to the lockdown (Covid) provided an additional benefit, keeping the vineyards in excellent condition at the time of harvest.
The harvest is done by hand in small crates, during the coolest hours of the day.
